"A premature baby needs so little breastmilk. I was always so careful not to spill any of it. I know of mothers who express surplus milk in the shower or simply throw it down the drain. It’s just such a waste."

Terri (breastmilk donor) Green Point

"I have cherished the opportunity to donate milk to a worthy cause."

Chloe (breastmilk donor) - Kreupelbosch

"The generous offer of donor milk came as such a relief to me and, maybe because I no longer felt so stressed, I found that my milk supply increased substantially – in fact, I suddenly found that I had more milk than Luca needed! So I decided to donate the extra milk to the breast milk bank."

Debbie K - donor and recipient. (Plumstead)

"It made me feel proud to know that my milk would go to a very deserving child. Having a baby is a miracle and if I could help just one child it would be an honour."

Andrea (breastmilk donor) - Diep River

Breastfeeding And The Working Mother

Continue Breastfeeding And Expressing

This is another option for moms who would prefer their baby to continue on breastmilk even when they cannot be around themselves.

There is an art to expressing, so it would be preferable to decide what method of expressing you are going to use and practice it before hand. Hand expressing, using a hand, battery operated or an electric pump are all options.

An advantage of practising this method beforehand is that you then have the opportunity of expressing and freezing milk for later use.

The principle would be that once at work you would express during the day and store that milk in a cool place (fridge or small cooler bag with an ice brick) for use the next day.

Should you not be able to express enough you could still use the previously frozen milk.
